Setting of Interest

I have worked in both the educational setting and Industry setting of Instructional Technology. I love both. I feel that the law firm that I currently work in is far more advanced than the community college that I had previously worked. Unfortunately, education does not have the funds readily available for advancements in technology like industry is. I feel that as long as I have a position available I would like to stay at the firm I currently work at. I enjoy being able to train all levels of personnel. I also have the opportunity to grow with technology to keep up with the demands that are placed on the firm and its ability to meet time demands while assuring effective and efficient representation for clients.
With the knowledge I gain along with obtaining my degree, I would like to advance to a team leader or management position in the future. I feel that I have a diverse technology background that would help to contribute to my ability to offer technology not only to our onsite firm but also across the state to the satellite firm and across the country to clients that deal with our firm. Net documents is an application that is now being used at our firm to offer a way for clients in Germany to securely submit files that are of high level importance and not able to be sent by email. That is just one application that I feel can help our company reach others globally and I am the trainer for my company as well as the client. I love my job.

Instructional Media

I am a trainer in a large attorney law firm. I love instructional media formats in my profession. It truly is the essential “lifeblood” for training to take place in my work environment. There are so many employees and setting up individual training would take too long when a broad topic has to reach a broad audience. So, we use “GoTo Meeting” to allow the users to log on to a meeting and call in to join a telephone conference. -along with all the other participants in the training. The “GoTo Meeting” program allows access of the trainer’s computer to be seen by all the participants as the trainer demonstrates with their computer while the users follow along. The telephone conference allows the users to hear the trainer and other participates with questions and comments as if in a face to face classroom. We also use classroom computers and televisions that will project the computer screens. This makes training clear and allows everyone to see and participate easier.
Another key function that we use at MVA for training is being able to VNC (virtual network connection) into a user’s computer that may have questions about a program or needs instruction on what is currently on their screen. It saves time for the user and for the trainer to ‘see’ exactly what the user is questioning and VNC also allows the trainer to take control of the mouse and ‘show’ the user what they need to do to be successful with their issue.
I see the future of instructional media in an instructional setting only becoming more and more ‘distance learning’ based. I think being able to send less time in the classroom and more time at their own desk will give user’s options and flexibility to attend training on their own time.

ISD Model

My personal assessment of the ISD model is that is works. In my field, I believe utilizing the ISD model helps the training team work together in a systematic process to create and administer a lesson that will assure successful learning for the employees. Needs analysis is key in developing a training lesson for the department that will be utilized by the attorneys and staff of the firm. With limited time available to spend in training the sessions have to be of great importance for the learners to participate in the classes. In corporate training, deadlines and projects are always pushing the trainers to put together a lesson that balances quality and timeliness. ADDIE analysis phase is the formal planning and quality assurance of the lesson to be trained. It defines the needs objectives of the company and the learner. To me, it is the most important phase of the ISD model because if this is not considered thoroughly; there is a chance that no one will participate in the training. We perform surveys and one-on-one meetings with the Member Attorneys to find out their goals for their own work efficiency and also the work efficiency of their secretary’s.
Another key factor in the ISD model for our firm is the Instructional Design Phase. This is the point when several of the training team members come together to plan what the content should be in the design and how it will be administered most effectively. With time restraints, this is always a challenge.
With a solid plan from information gathered through needs analysis and instructional Design phases, the Development and Implementation phases are easy. The training team continues to monitor development and also runs a pilot class for all analysis’ that are involved in the training to critique. One the pilot is complete and changes to the course documentation has been made the class is ready to be taught.
I enjoy my job and a big part of it is having an ISD model to make development of training documentation a structured process that is easy to follow. It is an essential part of what we do.

Experience working with physicians and other clinical practitioners preferred

This job caught my attention because it is different from the educational setting that most of the other Instructional Technology positions are in. I do not want to be in an educational school environment. My current position is very similar to this position. The major difference it that it is in the medical field working with physicians and my job is in a corporate firm working with attorneys. As far as the job itself, it describes what I do now. My main responsibility is development of documentation and training computer applications.

If anything did happen to my position, I would be interested in a position like the Clinical Systems Trainer. My background also covers the medical field. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Management. The only issue I would have with this particular job is the location. I would not want to move that far from where I am currently.

My Idea of Instructional Technology

My definition/concept of Instructional Technology is teaching while utilizing different methods of instruction. E-learning, web based training and our Online Blackboard course are examples of what I feel is Instructional Technology.
I work at a law firm that teaches through new employee orientation which is teacher instructed classroom computer training. They also offer online access to policy understanding and agreement training. I believe both instructions are examples of Instructional Technology.
